Education methods went wrong in the in the past or now ?

Had been spending time alone recently. Beside moving on, I had think back of my past and review some. I wish to talk about school, education. Perhaps I’m one of those who had a tradition of saying, *buey tuck chey* (not good in studies in Hokkien). Remembered when I was young at my nursery school days till just stepping into Primary school life. Consider myself a pupil with good results. My very first 6 months was with Ghim Moh Primary School. As my family decided to moved from Ghim Moh to Clementi ave 5 (not my current address), i need to transfer and continue my studies at Pei Tong Primary School. Things not going really smooth as I had problems trying to adapt another culture in a total new school environment for my age, I was 7 years old at that time. Just when I stepped into primary 3 and 4, I notice that my result had been dropping. Thank God I’m still in EM2 till primary 5, and that is also one of the worst time I had to go through. Totally daze in the life of playing.

[At that point of time I believe arcade gaming centre just introduce to our neighbourhood, reading dragon balls comics and cards. Some of you might find it stupid and like huh? It just like older generation, kampong kids running around the blocks and neighbourhood, playing marbles, block catching, adventure exploring canal. Simple, my childhood still able to buy sugar cane in a stick or pre-prepared cube form and chewing/bubble gums at provision shop. Whenever the Chinese ‘Hungry Ghost Festival’ there’s “Ge Tai”(stage performance), we can find those uncle riding the 80’s bicycles selling, ‘Muah Ji’, ‘Mai Ya Tang’ and ‘Long Xu Tang’.]

And yes, I failed almost all my subjects except Chinese and finding myself heading to EM3 on my final year at the school. Of course I had 'massage' session from my parents and of course the ultimate upset comes from myself. This happened because, I believe people around teached and guided us that once you’re in EM3 you’re hopeless, never able to made it to N.A when you promote to Secondary. At that time, I thought everything shattered and my future was finished. I think this would happened it was because the wrong idea people around pass to one another. My first day when school reopens, I burst into tears quietly in a corner myself. Because I had been separated from my ex-classmates for years although we are in the same school. Since I am on my own, I worked very hard on my studies, not long later I was transfer to another EM3 class who holds all the retained students. But to me it was a class who hold a better environment for me to study cause it more quiet and the teacher is strict and also always there to encourage us for better grades. Finally at PSLE, despite my effort I managed to get promoted to N.A instead of N.T in my new Secondary School.

As my dad need to work in Tuas, and my two elder brother had grown up. We need bigger house to accommodate us. We moved from Clementi ave 5 to JurongWest Street 71. And I’m posted to Pioneer Secondary School. Life in Secondary School was so different, first the number of subjects we take and stepping into life of a real teenager? Lolx In Secondary One my result was fair, seriously having problems each year in different subjects. When promoting to Secondary 3, I made my choice in Arts & Crafts but was slotted into Design & Technology classes. What the point of making us to choose when we don’t get what we want? Some of the guys who wants to get into D&T failed, just as I wanna get into Arts & Crafts. I Passed my GCE ‘N’ level in 1998 but only managed to get 3 credits for my GCE ‘O’ level the following year.

Okay, so why am I writing all these? Cause I felt, Is there any problems lies in the teaching style or the right kind of information about schooling should be conducted? I remembered teachers and parents always said, 'study is for your own good. It makes you a better person and gives you a bright future ahead'. Given at our age perhaps I felt that we might not understands or maybe some will, but why cant we make it even better to pass the right signal to students, why study is important to them? I somehow named those old method as a traditional schooling teaching. If, I mean if we could base on the interests of the pupils and guide them along, perhaps more in a career building teaching, I think we might find it more interesting. Which is closer to polytechnic life. Why cant we bring it forward to secondary students? Was it because they think we are still kids or too young to touch on topics like career building? I seriously feels it not too early. People always say, 'it never too early to start and it never too late to change'.
Firstly, back to primary school, please had a proper understanding of streaming them into different streams. Just like the local movies from director Jack Neo’s “Xiao Hai Bu Ben” Terry’s in EM3, he might be slow but doesn’t mean he’s stupid. Mainly just some students who needs extra care and time to teach them. I simply agree when this, when you wanna punish or judge one person, the responsiblities doesn’t just lies on educating the person who made mistakes but also the people around them. Beside telling them studying is good for them to make them a better person, why not give them more real example to understands, for examples, why do we need to study certain subjects? How does it benefits you as you grow.

Don just tell us in general, I had been in service industry for almost a total of 8 years. Mainly only 5 years were full time job. Being in retail for quite sometime I learnt to obtain customer’s needs and use their needs as selling point. How am I going to do that? Besides explanations, tell them how they can benefit from their needs? Isn’t the same to use it on education. And why I suggest to bring in career building earlier in secondary school days, normally introduces when we are in secondary 4. Cause I understand and believe a lot of school leavers of GCE ‘N’ or ‘O’ level student, do not know what kind of polytechnic or ITE course to take, and ended up picking the wrong course and waste the 3 years. At least provide us with something, like if you are interested being a Deejay, what do you need to focus on? One of the most important would be Mathematics. For Deejays when they are doing mixing of songs/sounds, they need to count the BPM( beat per minute) Perhaps to further on it, tell them what course they need to choose when going into polytechnic. So when they realize a career ahead of them, they know where to focus on, and not just studying is to make you a better person and gives you a better life when you grow up? What the f*ck is that? ß seriously this phrase just makes me feel simply irresponsible. I know what I want might be already introduces back in years, but simply it useless and not effective enough. Of course there’s really much much more for the local Ministry of Education to study.

*Purely personal thoughts, does not imply any meaning or judging on any organization mention above* Sometime I really wonder next time, how I have to bring up my kids. Haha.
