WhenTheToughDoesn’tGetGoing. - You have seen posters of depression and ways of seeking treatment plastered all over bus-stop ads, and even in television commercials. You know the symptoms of depression fairly well. However, there are other mental disorders often misdiagnosed with depression. Read on to find out if you or your loved ones are suffering from bipolar disorder.
Bipolar Disorder: Also known as manic depression, bipolar disorder is just as common in men as in women, and its onset is usually late adolescence. It is characterized by dramatic mood swings (known as episodes) from depressive to manic, often with ‘normal’ moods in between. Because symptoms of bipolar disorder during depressive episodes are similar to that of depression, sufferers are often misdiagnosed.
Symptoms during a depressive episode (usually lasting 2 weeks almost on a daily basis) include: - Feelings of hopelessness, intense sadness, emptiness, pessimism and guilt. - Changes in appetite/weight loss or gain. - Losing sleep or sleeping too much. - Feeling lethargic. - Lost interest in activities that he/she once found pleasurable. - Thoughts of or attempts at suicide. - Difficulties making decisions.
Symptoms during a manic episode (usually lasting more than a week on an almost daily basis) include: - Feelings of euphoria. - Irritability. - Racing thoughts and fast pace of speech. - Increased sexual drive/engaging in high risk sexual activities. - Drug abuse. - Little sleep needed. - Delusions of grandiosity (believing one has special power etc). - Having hallucinations.
Hypomania, a milder form of mania, occurs in some cases. Because people undergoing hypomania usually experiences higher work productivity and increased creativity without the hallucinations, sufferers may deny that anything is wrong when confronted. A person experiencing alternating episodes of depression and hypomania is known to be suffering from bipolar II disorder. Episodes of depression and mania is diagnosed s bipolar I disorder.
Commonly mistaken as having depressions, patients are usually given anti-depressants, which may lead to rapid cycling, whereby patients experiences switches between depressive and manic episodes in a matter of days, instead of the usual weeks.
Bipolar disorder patients can lead productive and meaningful lives with appropriate treatment. Threats of suicide and thoughts of death must be taken seriously. If you or your loved ones are suffering from many of the above symptoms, do not hesitate to seek help.
